Welcome to Key Education’s FREE STUFF

A lot is happening during the month of February as your students continue to master new skills in reading and math! Check out the fun activities for young learners to celebrate the winter season and Valentine’s Day! Be sure to download a copy of the fascinating short story about an “Ice Hotel” for those students reading at grade 2 level. The mystery about a dog named “Homer” is also perfect for working on fluency and reading comprehension skills. For those students striving hard to master the subtraction facts, we have included a reproducible game and fact timed test (minuends up to 20). Finally, this month’s “Beary” Mini Message Cards and the Snow Cooler Reader Award are just extra treats from Key Education!

Please note—included below are some activities to support classroom celebrations and topics related to national observances:
  • For National Children’s Dental Health month, have the children complete “My Tooth Book.” For more information about dental health, click here.
  • Even during the winter months, there’s fascinating science taking place out of doors! February is National Bird-Feeding Month. To learn more about the importance of feeding our feather friends, click here.
  • Take a few minutes and join the Great Backyard Bird Count on February 17–20 to help scientists better understand winter bird populations across the North American continent and Hawaii. Click here to view the map that shows locations of counts. For more information about how to participate during this four-day event and how kids can join the fun, click here. Backyards, schoolyards, city parks—all are great locations for observing and counting feathered friends!
  • An unofficial celebration, Random Acts of Kindness Day is Friday, February 17. Encourage a spirit of generosity (kind words and deeds) every day this month with a display of hearts on which students write about what they did.
  • If you have a pet, keep Monday, February 20 in mind because it is Love Your Pet Day. Draw students into the reading/classroom library corner by displaying pictures of them with their pets and lots of books on animals.
