Read, Talk & Create! offers engaging lessons for 21 different books to teach skills and concepts for both literacy and art. With the discussion prompts and easy-to-complete art projects, teachers can build oral language while strengthening young children's thinking processes. During the lessons, students communicate about what is read to them in verbal form through group discussions and informal presentations, in written form through simple writing or dictation projects, and in visual form through art in various media. In addition, the imaginative projects build fine and gross motor skills as children learn to manipulate a variety of fun art materials.

Many important literacy and art skills are targeted in Read, Talk & Create! Included are the following:

  • building vocabulary through conversation
  • taking turns in a group to talk about ideas
  • listening critically to a story
  • describing characters and other story elements
  • role-playing a character's actions
  • retelling a story
  • "writing" to explain and describe
  • identifying rhyming words
  • describing art elements in picture books
  • creating art by painting, drawing, sculpting, and gluing collage materials
  • working with line, color, pattern, texture, and shapes
  • collaborating on murals and other group projects

Not much preparation is needed. Just locate the suggested book titles, gather the art supplies, and follow the step-by-step activities in Read, Talk & Create! to engage young children with irresistible projects.
