Asking questions is an important part of understanding the world around us. Questions are also helpful in comprehending what we read. The five interrogative words—who, what, when, where, and why — are commonly known as the five W questions in journalism. When used together, they are an excellent formula that can help students recall facts and other details. To strengthen reading comprehension skills, the five W questions are featured at the end of each activity in Reading for Details. By answering these questions, students will learn to gather information from a reading passage. In time, children will begin to ask these questions automatically as they read.
Although the five W's are applied traditionally with news articles, children’s reading is clearly not limited to journalism. The five W's are effective for understanding all types of reading selections. Reading for Details is comprised of a wide variety of reading passages: news articles, short stories, science articles, letters, recipes, postcards, fliers, advertisements, billboards, directions, and more. Educators may also use the passages as a jumping-off point for writing activities. Let students craft their own questions for a selected passage or compose and share their own stories, letters, recipes, jokes, and so on, as appropriate.
To assist educators who work with struggling readers, each passage in this resource book has been rated—most of them fall between levels 2.0 and 3.0. If needed, use a few passages as diagnostics to determine students’ reading levels before tailoring specific lessons for them. Remember that good reading is not limited to silent reading. To strengthen fluency and verbal skills, let students also work with partners, taking turns to read the selections aloud and answering the questions orally.
