Chapter 1 Sample Activities

When encountering unfamiliar words, beginning readers use a variety of strategies to decode them. Readers may sound out the individual letters, look for familiar letter patterns or chunks in the words, and/or use the context of the sentences as clues. To meet the needs of children who are just beginning to acquire word-identification skills, Sound Out and Sort offers activities to help students strengthen their abilities to manipulate speech sounds in words, apply letter-sound correspondences, and discriminate letter clusters by contrasting and sorting words. The mastery of these essential skills enables students to travel with ease down the road toward reading success.

Sound Out and Sort supports the NCTE (National Council of Teachers of English) and IRA (International Reading Association) standards by providing instructional materials that sensitize children to the smallest units of sound or phonemes in spoken words, help them recognize letter-sound relationships, and engage them in activities and explicit lessons for more advanced skill development. Tailor the word-sorting activities to meet the needs of students by adjusting the number of featured words or by selecting obvious contrasts for categories. Sets of words with the most obvious contrasts are offered first in each section. Included in the provided word lists are the most common word families plus many more.

Each chapter in Sound Out and Sort is organized according to letter patterns in words, starting with CVC word families in the first chapter. Coordinated with these word lists are phonemic awareness warm-ups along with word-building activities. To round out the lessons and provide further reinforcement of skill development, have children complete the reproducible activity sheets that correlate with specific word-sorting exercises. What a great combination—phonemic awareness, phonics, and word families—all wrapped up in one resource!

Included Activities:

  • Phonemic-awareness warm-ups for manipulating sounds in words
  • Word-building exercises with letter cards and activity sheets
  • Word lists for sorting experiences using rimes, single consonants, or letter clusters as categories
  • Picture-word activities, fill in the blanks, word finds, word unscrambles, memory match mini-games, and more for additional skill practice
