Sight words are the basic building blocks on which sentences are created. They are high-frequency words that good readers recognize instantly. But, that recognition doesn’t happen instantly - it takes practice. Reading Sight Words in Context was created to offer students the chance to see sight words in the context of engaging poems and stories and then work with the sight words in games and follow-up activities to help build recognition. This is crucial because children who struggle with sight words will struggle harder with overall reading comprehension and fluency.
The 170 sight words presented in Reading Sight Words in Context were researched and compiled from the following well-respected word lists: Dolch Sight Word List (Preprimer, Primer, Grade 1, and Grade 2); 100 Most Frequent Words in Books for Beginning Readers by Elena Bodrova, Deborah Leong, and Dmitri Semenov (1998); The Word Bank of High Frequency Writing Words from Rebecca Sitton’s Spelling Sourcebook series (Educators Publishing Service); Dr. Fry’s 1000 Instant Words by Edward Fry, Ph.D. (Teacher Created Resources, 2004); The American Heritage Word Frequency Book by John B. Carroll (Houghton Mifflin, 1971); and A Basic Vocabulary of Elementary School Children by Henry D. Rinsland (Rinsland Press, 2007).
Includes: 14 sight word poems; 14 sight word stories; over 90 reproducible activities; over 80 games and follow-up ideas; and, reproducible puppets and flannel board patterns.
