High-Interest/Low-Readability: The Heroic Herald includes 10 stories written as high-interest newspaper articles about real-life heroes. Five of the heroes are children—children who have done important and remarkable thinks! All five of the children have received the Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes. This prize honors outstanding young leaders who have made a positive difference for people and our planet.
The other five stories are about animals—animals that have performed heroic acts, which have helped or enriched the lives of people! Although many people may say that these animals acted out of instinct, after reading the stories you will be amazed at how much thought and compassion these remarkable animals demonstrated.
The exciting evening news broadcasts, found on the included “Evening News” audio CD, allows reading to become a multi-sensory experience. Children have the opportunity to listen to each story and become familiar with the vocabulary and content before they attempt to read each selection independently. Being able to hear each story, follow along with the text, and complete the reproducible comprehension activities, gives children a wonderful reading experience that will build their confidence and reading skills.
